[D]: Hi Jack, tell me a bit about yourself - where are you from, where do you live and what do you do for a living? [J]: I’m from the Isle of Wight originally where I lived until moving to London in 2019. I now live in Chiswick and work as a print designer for WYSE London. [D]: How is living in London? Do you think you’ll stay there long-term? If so or if not, why? [J]: I love London and would like to live there for a good few years, however in the future I would like to move to a more rural area in a stone cottage in a village. [D] Do you think being a textiles print designer is also something you’ll continue on with? I know you mentioned being self employed previously. [J] Print design is something I would like to continue with however potential freelance and creating my own brand rather than being restricted by working for a brand. I would like to have a home studio to work from. This would also allow me to have dogs which I’m unable to at the moment. [D] Could you outline some of the items you chose and give me a brief explanation to how each one plays a role in your life? [J] my AirPods, I use these everyday walking to and from work listening to podcasts or calling family members and my partner etc. my tape measure which I use for work purposes everyday, it is very important in my job to be specific with measurements. My antidepressants help me to regulate my anxiety and keep me on track and able to carry on with life and work in a more positive and confident way. My vintage sewing box which contains all my sewing supplies which I use very often for my hobbies and personal use. My glasses, I can see without my glasses however they help with preventing headaches and help To see better long distance. My tobacco which is currently the cheapest one on sale as it's become very expensive, I couldn't live without my tobacco with my stressful job. I have a cigarette at 2:30 every afternoon on my break so I can chill for 2 mins and take myself out of a stressful environment of fashion. [D] Speaking more about the power that our possessions have, I wanted to address some of them specifically - I know that the rolling tobacco and the lighter can bring the suggestion of self indulgence, or actually comfort - do you think that this applies to you? Also to what extent do you feel that it has a strong hold on your daily routine? [J] My tobacco and lighter has a massive impact on my daily routine, without them I go into full panic mode! I need them at all times and my day really does centre around when I will have my next cigarette. I have a cigarette mostly at the same time every day, walking to work, walking from work on lunch after dinner etc. My tablets are also something which I take every morning with my coffee. This routine is the same everyday. [D] I also wanted to talk about house plants. I’ve always known you to have and take care of your plants, do they dictate how homely your place of living is? [J] I enjoy having my houseplants and my home would feel bare without them they bring me joy when they grow a new leaf and introduce a routine of watering both the house plants and the flowers on my balcony. [D] Overall, would you say that your day to day life and routine is influenced by your possessions, or do you think that they don’t actually play any significant role at all? [J] The possessions I have shown have a massive impact on my life and routine and some I couldn't live without so I completely agree they have a significant role.
JACK
AND HIS LIGHTER
Jack has been my closest friend since around 2018. I’ve watched him grow into a confident and self assured individual who is the epitome of the phrase ‘can achieve anything he puts his mind to’. Regardless of which scenario Jack is in, he always without failure, carries an armoury of items. My personal interpretation of Jack is that being well prepared is paramount, routine is essential and that exactness and certainies are the key to safety - anxiety is something that he has struggled with. Much like in Millie’s interview, I found that in Jack’s, objects manouver throughout his life in a way that dictates his mind state and how he approaches each situation. It is almost as if that jack can only continue on with his tasks if his items allow him to. The agency becomes the ruler of routine.
